Jimmy Nelson’s book ‘Before they Pass Away’ contains stunning images of indigenous peoples in their traditional clothing. Nelson obtained these images through spending time getting to know and befriending the tribes. As a result, each photo seems very personal and is a celebration of the pride they have in their culture and traditions. Nelson explains that many tribal traditions may die out because the younger generations are choosing not to stretch their lips or wear traditional clothing , opting instead for more western style clothes. Although the traditions will still remain, this may over time be as memories rather than as a living, vibrant culture. Whilst westernizing their daily routines, may make their lives easier, it brings with it the compromise of possibly losing the essence of their past and their rich relationship with nature.
