in 1882, Agnes Denes created the international environmental instillation, ‘wheatfield, a confrontation’. The piece was made in New York, in down town Manhattan and was a huge two acres big, right next to Wall street and the World Trade Center. In the photo, the corn contrasts beautifully with the hard, man made buildings, showing how separated our cities are from nature. I imagine this instillation/performance caused a huge stir in New York at the time as a wheat field would be a new and surprising sight for many. I’m sure that Denes bought round a lot of interest and awareness as her work is very impacting and astonishing especially in a time when global warming was only just gaining recognition. This is a very inspiring piece of work/performance that Denes has thought out of the box to create.
